Take
the picture to make it last...write the story and preserve the past."
Imagine you are going through a box of old photos.
Some are old black and white pictures, some are torn, and others
are discolored beyond recognition. Trying to identify the people
in the pictures that might be relatives becomes an impossible task.
Why? You might not have been born when the pictures were taken,
or there may not be anyone living from that time to tell you their
names, and what they were doing. Who were these people, arms around
each other, laughing and looking like they were having the time
of their lives? Where were they and what were they laughing about?
Looking through the box, you find several news articles, letters
written with such detail and even some old family recipes. Most
have aged and have turned so yellow, that the print is hard to read
anymore. When you find an article about someone’s engagement,
wedding, or graduation, do you know if it was written about a relative
– or was it just a friend of the family? What year was it?
Past generations who might be able to help answer these questions
may no longer be alive. Pictures, memorabilia, news articles, letters,
recipes, Sunday School lessons, favorite scripture verses written
on notes – all become a mystery and the stories behind it
will never be able to be passed down to children and grandchildren.
Sadly, too much of history is lost when pictures get destroyed by
time, weather and lack of proper storage. In a similar way, our
personal stories about who we are and how we lived, and what we
felt are gone for lack of writing them down.
Have you got boxes or albums of pictures of family and friends tucked
away in a closet or under your bed that are starting to deteriorate?
Do you know who are in those pictures? Within those pictures are
emotions – yours, and those who are in the pictures.
The past is an important part of who we are and provides your family
information that will be treasured for generations to come.
